One of the most common questions before a project is simple: how much mulch glue do you actually need? This guide uses EcoLock HD's published coverage figures so you can plan without over- or under-buying.
Coverage per gallon
A single gallon of EcoLock HD covers approximately:
- Mulch / bark: up to 193 sq ft
- Pine straw: up to 150 sq ft
- Rock / gravel: up to 100 sq ft
Rock and gravel cover less area per gallon because the material is denser and needs a heavier coat to bond well.
Why coverage varies
The figures above are a starting point. Actual coverage depends on three things: material porosity, how deep the bed is, and how many coats you apply. Two thin coats give the longest hold and are recommended over one heavy coat.
Estimating your project
Measure the length and width of each bed, multiply for square footage, then divide by the coverage figure for your material. For mixed projects or anything irregular, the EcoLock HD coverage calculator does the maths for you, including a two-coat allowance.
A quick example
A 10 ft × 12 ft mulch bed is 120 sq ft. At ~193 sq ft per gallon on mulch, one gallon comfortably covers it with margin for a light second coat. The same 120 sq ft in gravel (~100 sq ft per gallon) would need a little over one gallon, so two gallons gives you headroom for the recommended heavier coat.
