Coverage at a Glance

One gallon of EcoLock HD covers the following areas with the recommended two-coat application:

Mulch & Bark
~193
sq ft / gallon
2 coats recommended
Pine Straw
~150
sq ft / gallon
2 coats recommended
Rock & Gravel
~100
sq ft / gallon
2 coats recommended

If you're applying a single coat on flat ground with good conditions, you'll get roughly double these numbers. But two coats is the sweet spot for durability — especially on slopes or high-traffic areas.

How to Measure Your Area

For rectangular beds, multiply length by width in feet. A bed that's 20 feet long and 4 feet wide is 80 sq ft. For irregular shapes, break them into rough rectangles, calculate each one, and add them together. Don't stress about precision — round up to the nearest 50 sq ft to give yourself a small buffer.

Common bed sizes for reference:

Area Type Typical Size Gallons Needed (Mulch)
Tree ring 25–50 sq ft ~0.5 gallon
Mailbox bed 30–60 sq ft ~0.5 gallon
Front walkway border 80–200 sq ft 1 gallon
Foundation planting bed 150–400 sq ft 1–2 gallons
Full front yard mulch 400–800 sq ft 2–4 gallons
Commercial / HOA bed 1,000+ sq ft 5+ gallons

What Affects Coverage Rate?

Several factors determine whether you'll land on the high or low end of the coverage range:

Material type and size. Fine mulch and pine straw absorb less adhesive than chunky bark or large river rock. Smaller, tighter materials give you better coverage per gallon.

Mulch depth. The adhesive bonds the top 1–2 inches of material. If your mulch is only 2 inches deep, you'll use less product than on a 4-inch bed because you need less penetration.

Number of coats. One coat provides basic hold. Two coats (with 4–6 hours between them) provides significantly stronger bonding that lasts 18–24 months. We always recommend two coats.

Spray technique. An even, sweeping spray pattern from 8–12 inches above the surface uses product efficiently. Avoid pooling in one spot — light and even beats heavy and concentrated.

Pro Tip: Apply the first coat, wait 4–6 hours, then apply the second coat perpendicular to the first. This cross-hatch pattern creates a stronger mesh and more even coverage.

Which Size Should You Buy?

Product Best For Coverage (2 coats) Price
1-Gallon EcoLock HD Single beds, touch-ups, small projects 100–193 sq ft $49.99
2-Gallon EcoLock HD Multiple beds, full yard, best value 200–386 sq ft $89.99

The 2-gallon jug saves you about $10 compared to buying two 1-gallon jugs individually — and it's the better choice if you're covering more than one bed or your total area exceeds 200 sq ft.
